. this morning the search for a new brief in san jose is about to hit second gear. the first of four community meetings gets under way today where city leaders hope to get feedback from local neighborhoods on what they want in a new chief. damian trujillo is live at the berryessa community center where the first of the meetings will be held tonight. damian, good morning. you're already hearing about some possible candidates for the job? >> reporter: yeah, we hear about a couple of people who might be interested in applying for the police chief position. i'm give you those names in just a bit. this meeting tonight is at 6:30. no one is denying that fixing this ship or righting this ship is going to be an easy task. the new chief will have to deal with lower morale and a dwindling budget, so it will be a tough task. a few months ago chris moore announced he'd be retiring by january 31st. he leaves a department that is nowhere near the staffing levels he feels are needed to keep the city and his officers safe. the new chief will have to come in and play a political card game basically, working wi

's going to be cold with some wind. that's coming up. >>> a san jose firefighter is recovering after a ceiling collapsed on him as he was fighting a three-alarm fire. it broke out around 8:00 last night. the flames raced through four apartments and damaged two others. a water logged ceiling broke loose and fell on the 16-year veteran. >> he was injured by a piece of large sheetrock, a ceiling that had fallen in when he was in the stairwell. so it had fallen from a considerable height. >> the firefighter was rushed to a nearby hospital with a concussion and fractured vertebrae. officials believe the fire was accidental. >>> memorial services will be held tomorrow for a young man who was shot and killed last week in apattempted carjacking in san jose. 22-year-old rory park was killed by two armed robbers who went on a crime spree in san jose on november 16. they are accused of murder, robbing four east san jose businesses, and having a shootout with police that left one officer hurt. jonathan willbanks is in custody. a donation fund has been set up for the victim's burial costs. >>> po

on this day in 2009 gathered tonight in san jose. they wanted to remember him and to demand a trial. nbc bay area's kimberly tere is at frost elementary school with a look at where the case stands now. >> reporter: blocks from where the killing happened and despite arrests made three years ago, the case is yet to go to trial. >> we want justice for michael. that's what he serves and that's what we are here for. as a family, we're not going to stop fighting for that. michael deserves it and we are going to get it. >> reporter: michael russell's family hosted a vigil at this elementary school the last three years. on november 10th, 2009, he was stabbed to death in the backyard of his home. >> i remember it like it happened yesterday. >> reporter: soon after the killing, police arrested two suspects in the case, both classmates of the victim. randy thompson 16 and jay williams 15 at the time of the killing and both are charged as adults. while the hearing was two with years ago, the trial is yet to begin because of numerous continuances. >> we want to do whatever we can to push this forward. >>

at sacred heart community center in san jose with some people in need getting some help. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. the volunteers are finally starting to show up this morning and, boy, it is cold and wet out here. some of these folks have actually been waiting in line for up to 18 hours just to register for a chance at holiday food and toys. i spoke with one man this morning who told me he is still out of work, there are kids in the home and that's why he is here at sacred heart community service where about 200 people are in line. there are tents out here, some just under umbrellas and blankets. the poverty rate, i spoke with one gentleman and he said for the county it's 10.6%. they expect to distribute about 7,000 food boxes between thanksgiving and christmas. right now, though, they could use some help with cash or food. >> so we hope to have all the food in here by this coming friday. right now we have four turkeys in the freezer. so you do the math on that one. there's a lot of work to be able to do. >> reporter: registration this morning starts somewhe

>> it's happening in san jose. where firefighters is injured and several apartments heavily damaged after 3 alarm fire tore through this apartment buildin building. good evening everyone. happy thanksgiving. >> dan has the nature off. that fire began in apartment building on willow leaf drive after 8 tonight. lillian joins us live with the very latest. lillian? >>reporter: larry firefighters say this fire started in the roof attic area. these are 2 story town homes. part of the kimberly wood apartment complex and crews are mopping up. fire department got the call at 8:30 p.m. they say it appears the cause may related to a fireplace. flames most intense in the roof attic area of one unit. total of 4 units are said to be destroyed by either flames smoke or water damage and at least 10 people have been displaced from their homes. we spoke to man who rush to get his wife and kids out of the house after neighbor pounded on the door alerting them that the fire. his unit is one of the 4 destroyed. >> my 11-year-old daughter she's really sad. sad destroyed and all that stuff. >

and the update on the investigation there to the case. >> reporter: yeah. i checked in with the san jose police department spokesperson for the update on this case. they are still search for a second suspect or at least that's what was happening all this week as they released a sketch on that expect now hee mailed me back and said per the homicide unit we aren't confirming or denying any new information. that came after i asked them if an arrest had been made. >> the man was shot and killed last week. one of the suspects a 26-year- old was in court wednesday. police say he and another man robbed four businesses, murdered a 22-year-old in a carjacking and participated in a shoot out with two officers one of the officers was hit and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. willbanks was arrested the next morning. officers released a sketch of the second suspect, a 20,000- dollar reward is being offered for his arrest. the funeral for the victim is being held this morning at 11. we will continue to talk to police and ask them about updates on that second suspect and bring you new information on
